We commonly see students have issues with their Mic not working on Discord. This can be especially frustrating since you will not be able to communicate with our instructors to resolve any issues.

The following are our brief recommendations on how to resolve issues with your Mic in Discord. Discord also has its own troubleshooting guides (Google Discord Troubleshooting Guide) that you should review as well.

Recommended Troubleshooting Steps

Step 1: Establish Communication (Optional, but recommended)

  • If you are in a Discord Voice Channel with other students and an instructor, but they can't hear you, start a Discord Direct Message or Chat with the Instructor. You can do this by right-clicking the instructor's name and selecting Message.

Step 2: Check the Basics

  • Let's ensure the basics are in place before we deep dive into the more complex troubleshooting. Confirm that;
    • Your Mic and Headset are plugged in
    • The mute button on your Mic is not pressed
  • Now it's best to confirm that your Mic is working outside of Discord or at all. Open the Voice Recorder App on Windows, and try to record your voice. If that works, then the problem is most likely a Discord setting. Otherwise, your Microphone is not working and you'll have to review Windows Mic debugging guides to resolve that.

Step 3: Check Your Input Device on Discord

  • First, confirm you are not muted on Discord. If the Mic icon has a "red line" through it you are muted. Click the Mic to unmute.

  • If that does not work, we need to check your Voice &  Video Settings in Discord. To access those, first, click on the Gear Cog near your username.

  • Check whether your input mode is with "Push to Talk" or "Voice Activity". For testing purposes, switch to "Voice Activity". At first, use the "Automatically determine input sensitivity option". If that fails, turn that off and trying increasing the sensitivity.

  • Go to Voice and Video, and try the "Lets Check" button. If your Mic does not work, try changing the Input device from Default (or whatever is selected) to the other options. It is definitely worth your time to test every option regardless of whether it completely makes sense :)

Note that the most common issues we see are; student's mics muted via a button, the wrong Input Device being selected, and Push to Talk being enabled but not working.
